Lady Bison go 2-0, win Brockway Tip-Off

BROCKWAY — Clearfield rolled through the Brockway Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday, knocking off St. Marys, 59-47, before running past host Brockway, 79-34, to finish 2-0 on the day and win the title in the three-team event.

In the opener against St. Marys, Eve Helsel set a new career high with 29 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, making eight two-point baskets and two three-pointers while shooting 7-of-10 from the line.

Sonny Diehl added 24 points and 12 rebounds, all on two-point field goals and 6-of-8 from the stripe. Mia Helsel buried a pair of threes for six points.

Braelyn Beck led St. Marys with 13 points, including three triples. Molly Hanslovan had 12 points all on two-point baskets, and Taylor Gornati chipped in 10 points.

Clearfield used a 16-6 first quarter to take control and held off the Lady Dutch the rest of the way.

In the second game, Mia Helsel answered with a monster night of her own, pouring in a career-high 37 points and setting a Clearfield single-game record with nine three-pointers.She added four two-point baskets and went 2-of-4 from the line.

Sonny Diehl followed with 22 points on nine two-point baskets and a perfect 4-of-4 from the line.

Eve Helsel finished with nine points on three two-point baskets and one triple.

Alyssa Natoli, Myleigh Hudson and Charlie Spingola each hit a triple for three points apiece, and Riley Cummings added two free throws.

Rheanna Spinda led Brockway with 13 points and Sophia Morrison had nine.

The Lady Bison never trailed, jumping out to an 18-5 lead after one quarter and cruising to the 45-point victory.

St. Marys (2-1) plays at DuBois on Wednesday, while Brockway (0-3) travels to Elk County Catholic that same day.
