Bison Roll Through Pool Play, Earn No. 1 Gold Seed at Saint Francis University Invitational ~
LORETTO — The Clearfield High School volleyball team turned in a
strong performance Saturday at the 25th Annual St. Francis University Invitational, finishing pool play with an unblemished record and earning
the No. 1 seed in the Gold Bracket.
The tournament featured 30 high school teams from throughout the
region, providing the Bison with a challenging day of competition.
Clearfield opened pool play with a pair of 25-22 victories over Somerset
before continuing its strong play against Maplewood, winning 25-18
and 25-19.The Bison then defeated United 25-15 and 25-19 before wrap-
ping up pool play with a hard-fought 27-25, 25-17 victory over Claysburg-Kimmel.
The four victories gave Clearfield a perfect pool-play record and the top
seed in the Gold Bracket. Unfortunately for the Bison, the No. 1 seed
proved to be a difficult draw inthe second round, as Clearfield was matched
up against Richland.
With Gold Bracket matches being decided by a single game to 25 points, Clearfield found itself in an early hole against the Rams. Richland jumped
out to a six-point advantage before the Bison battled back and cut the
deficit to four. Clearfield continued to fight, but Richland held on for the
25-21 victory and eliminated the Bison from the tournament.
Richland went on to win its remaining matches and capture the Gold
Bracket championship.
Despite the early tournament exit, Clearfield received a strong individual
effort from throughout its lineup.
Ellie McBride finished the day with 58 assists and 20 service points.
Sonny Diehl recorded 28 kills, 30 digs, 12 service points and four blocks.
Keilah Glunt contributed 18 kills, 53 digs, 26 service points and two blocks, while Araya Korb added 10 kills, 15 service points and four blocks.
Molly Morgan finished with eight kills, 15 service points and three blocks.
Piper Kaskan added six kills, while Alexa Smeal recorded 17 digs and
Eloise Johnston collected a team-high 36 digs.
The Bison will return home Tuesday, Sept. 22, when they host Penns Valley.~
Coach Sandy Bailor with Coach Kelly Hiltabidle Kaskan.
To add a bit of context ~ While Richland overcame the Lady Bison by four
points in this tournament, this is not the first time the two teams have met this
season. On September 8th the two met at Clearfield with Richland at that
time being ranked by MaxPreps at #3 in the State. Clearfield won that
regular-season match 3-2 so in the aggregate the two teams are
tied at 3 games apiece.
The Lady Rams' other loss this year came when they fell 2-0 to
Hollidayburg in a tournament loss on August 29. The Lady
Tigers did not participate in the S.F.U. Tourney but our girls
will meet them on their court on Monday 9/28/26.
Now here is a link to the MaxPreps Article. You can click on it and read the whole thing if you like.
On the other hand I think the article itself also deserves some "context" of its own ~
The author just falls all over him(or her) self piling the kudos onto Richland, writing in part:
"Richland have been on a roll lately: they've won 40 of their last 50 contests, dating back to last year.
That gives them a 15-2-2 (sic) record this season." after saying "Clearfield fell just short of the Richland
by a score of 1-0. The match marked the first time this season in which the Bison were not able to
get on the board. Having lost for the first time this season, Clearfield fell to 11-1 . . . " conveniently not
mentioning that one of Richland's losses came at Clearfield and that that loss was in a toughly
fought 5 game match while their win at Loretto was by only 4 points in a 1-game
sudden death contest after everyone had taken part in a day long marathon. And comparing
the Win-Loss statistics, Richland has 17 wins against 4 non-wins (2L, 2T) for an 81% Win
percentage compared to Clearfield's 11-1 record with a 92% win percentage.
