Clearfield PA Elks Lodge #540 ,
28th Annual High Country Arts Fair, July 10, 2016
In partnership with ladybisonsports.org . . .
Since 1989 the Clearfield PA Elks Lodge has presented their High Country Arts Fair in cooperation with the
Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources, the administrator of S.B. Elliott State Park, Penfield PA.
Because the Fair is held on publicly owned land the proceeds must all go toward supporting
non-profit organizations in our area. The weather this year was as nice as anyone can remember.

Several such organizations do their part in helping the Elks with the Fair each year and about two dozen
are presented a distribution of the proceeds at a dinner held each October at the Clearfield Lodge.
Scroll down the page for a list of the benifiting associations.

Some 150 Craft Vendors and Artists also take part in the Fair and help attract the always large crowds.
Pictured left are Bev and Fritz Lawhead while on break from herding their many craft vendors.

Guests are greeted by and pay their Chicken Dinner money to John Troxell while PER Gus Yeager looks on.
Admission to the grounds, browsing the many vendors and enjoying the entertainment is all free of charge.
I'll continue now with my photo entries and my normal inane comments but we do
have a new feature too. Also present with camera at the ready for this year's fair was
Brother Elk Frank Carbalan ( a Clearfield native ) from Lodge #1600 in State College.
His pictures are posted below in a separate folder
A few of 150 or so the craft vendors scattered through the park.  .  .  .

Participants - These are some of the area charitable and non-profit organizations that have benefited
from the Clearfield Elks High Country Arts Fair over the years ~
The Clearfield Elks would also like to thank the many local companies
that graciously provide manpower and in-kind donations.
The centerpiece of the food offerings is the popular and famous Elks P.E.R. Chicken Barbecue dinner.

Here, folks are being served their dinners by a number of our Clearfield Elks ~
But, of course, before any serving can take place, there's lot of cooking to be done, some Elks
volunteers beginning as early as 6 a.m. to get the fires going. Totally invisble to our guests,
another whole cooking gang is busy at our Country Home in Goshen preparing yet more
dinners that are later transported to Elliott Park by our "Chicken Shuttle Crew." ~
C.H.S. Swimming Coach Jackie Morrison (l)
was on site with a couple of her buddies who
seem to have caught the attention of craft-
person Sherry Robison. Jackie's swim team
memebers are always helpul at the
Fair, running the soda carts.

The Clearfield Elks are always happy to see that the health
care professionals from Clearfield E.M.S. are on the scene . . .
. . . and we're grateful to Q102/900 WCPA and on-air
personality "Big Moose"for producing
a live-remote from this year's festivities.
Not everybody has the appetite to eat a big chicken dinner and for
those folks many other choices abound. All of the food booths at the
Fair are staffed by member Elks, their spouses, their kids and
other community minded area residents.

And the folks on the serving lines are backed up by those
behind the scenes including, top left, Dave Semelsberger
cooking sausage while Mike Peterson and Joe Waroquier
keep track of the day's receipts, above.

Throughout the afternoon, entertainment was provided by astounding fiddler and banjoist Megan Mc Garry
and dad Chris Mc Garry. This was Megan's second straight appearance at the Fair and I'd have to say that
in those two short years has already become a crowd favorite.

Megan & Chris were followed on the stage by the "Brewhouse Gang." ~

This would seem to be yet another shot of the sausage line,
but here I direct your attention to the building behind. Years
ago this was the restaurant that served visitors to the park
and like all of the period buildings at Ellott and at so
many other Pennsylvania State Parks, was built in the
1930's by the New Deal's Civilian Conservation Corps.
An excellent presentation of the history and impact of the
C.C.C. can be seen at nearby Parker Dam State Park.
Next year I'll have to get more pictures of these buildings.
